Title: The Pancake Stone (2019)
Author: Ottilia Stephens
Media: Japanese bamboo ink pen on paper; watercolour on paper. Edited in Photoshop.
About this Image: This image was made in response to a request to produce an image of a ‘private landmark’ for my MA Illustration online course with Falmouth Univerisity. This image is of the Pancake Stone on Ilkley Moore, West Yorkshire. My husband and I first decided to start dating when we were sheltering from the rain under this stone during a hike together in 2014. It is a very special place for us and I was delighted to be able to share this private landmark during my MA.
I was also happy with this image because we were encouraged to experiment with different methods of making images during this module. Scanning in marks made in traditional ways to use them in a digitally edited image represented an important moment in my practice, and is a technique I still use frequently.
The scanned textures below were used to make this image. Feel free to include them in the article. If you need higher resolutions, let me know.
